Green IT is the practice of using computing resources efficiently. Typically, technological systems or computing products that incorporate green computing principles take into account economic viability, social responsibility, and environmental impact. Analyst at Butler Group, pointed to significant cost savings of 10 to 20 percent that can be achieved by going green. A typical green computing solution is the Project Big Green, where IBM is virtualising 3,900 servers. It says that this will save 80% on power bills and offer greater flexibility for future developments. Over time, the savings on energy costs and the reduction in the number of cooling systems will add to the savings on real estate to house the reduced footprint of the data centres.
It is too early to predict details of what effect the green revolution will have on IT systems, but general trends are appearing. The principles of virtualisation and consolidation in the server and storage markets are also gaining ground in the PC-centric world. Servers that are under-used can be consolidated onto a single computer to get more value per kilowatt and with space and power at a premium centralisation of IT is another factor pushing companies to deploy virtualisation techniques that can radically improve the utilisation of servers.
What is clear, though, is that for most IT directors, resilience and availability are still key priorities, ahead of energy and corporate responsibility. A survey of 244 organisations, conducted at the London Energy Summit, found 71.4 per cent of technology specialists believe resilience would not be sacrificed for energy efficiency. But with ever increasing pressure in the form of government legislation the push towards more efficient IT infrastructures has never been greater.
