Licensing within a Virtualised Infrastructure
Essential information on avoiding Microsoft software licensing problems in virtualised server and desktop environments.
Virtualisation of the server or desktop has moved swiftly from the concept to reality for most organisations. Customers have, or are looking to, greatly increase their use of virtualisation technologies and, whilst they readily understand how the technology can help, mapping the right license model and keeping accurately within it is often a minefield. In order to combat the myriad of virtualisation whitepapers, licensing briefs and general hearsay, Civica Services Ltd has compiled this overview document to help guide you through some of the Microsoft licensing pitfalls encountered in a virtualised environment.
General Rules
There is no concurrency under the Microsoft licensing model, and this does not change within a virtual or server hosted environment. PCs without a hard drive, diskless PCs etc are treated as a traditional PC for the purposes of licensing.
